Ruth Dobberpuhl is a Junior Mechanical Engineering major and was hired by Manitowoc Cranes as a Structural Intern for the Summer of 2024.
What did you work on this summer? This summer I’ve mostly been working on strap brackets that keep the straps secured to the top of the boom while shipping. I’ve also gotten to revise engineering drawings and put together a model crane.
What’s the best thing about your job? I really enjoy the hands-on aspect of my internship, especially working on projects that will be manufactured and used on real machines. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the practical application of my work. At Manitowoc, I’ve gained valuable insights into engineering and design. What I appreciate most is how they present me with problems and guide me through developing various solutions. This approach teaches me a lot about engineering design as well as allows me to experience what it’s like to work as an engineer.
What’s great about your company? Manitowoc is a great place to work because of its supportive environment. Everyone is eager to help, making it an ideal place for me to learn about engineering, design, and cranes. These cranes are used to building numerous structures and seeing them working is truly inspiring.
