Student Success Story – Zachary Pflanzer

Zachary Pflanzer is a Junior Mechanical Engineering major and was hired by Reader Precision Solutions as a Manufacturing Engineering Intern for the Summer of 2024.

What did you work on this summer? I’m working on an automation project involving our laser engraver. Currently, an operator loads pallets and fixtures by hand with parts that need to be engraved. Many times there is some error when loading parts that can cause them to be marked incorrectly, essentially making them scrap. I’m in the process of making and programming a system that can identify incorrectly loaded parts or pallets and prevent a mark from occurring. Along with this, the UI of the laser will be streamlined and specific laser jobs will be able to be identified based on what pallet or fixture is loaded. This can be achieved by integrating machine vision with the laser engraver. It’s a very challenging project that involves many different skills, so I’m learning a lot!

What’s the best thing about your job?  There is an incredible amount of freedom with what I do. I have the tools and resources to think through problems on my own if I can, and Reader Precision Solutions trusts me to complete my projects. However, there’s an amazing team of people that can provide help when I need it!

What’s great about your company?  Reader Precision Solutions is a very innovative company that practices continuous improvement. They are always open to new tech or strategies to improve processes. On top of that, they always prioritize making the customer happy.

How did you find your internship opportunity?  I found my internship at the MSOE Career Fair, and received a referral from a connection I had.

How did the Career Connections Center help you with your internship search? By hosting the Resume Raid, the Career Connections Center helped me ensure my resume was ready for the Career Fair.
